PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- No. 13-ranked North Florida mounted a final round surge firing a six-under 282 Tuesday en route to earning a third-place finish at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational held at Sawgrass Country Club.
The Opsreys carded the second lowest round of the event climbing from sixth to third on the final day. UNF finished with a three-day total 877, just one shot behind runner-up UCF and five strokes behind tournament champion Arkansas.
A trio of UNF linksters recorded under-par scores on the last day led by senior Kevin Aylwin's three-under 69. Juniors Kevin Phelan and Pete Kellerman both posted scores of two-under 70. Phelan (T-6 / 215) and Aylwin (T-8 / 216) both claimed Top 10 finishes. Kellerman finished tied for 27th (223).
Junior Sean Dale and freshman MJ Maguire both carded rounds of one-over 73 to round out the UNF lineup. Dale finished tied for 36th (224) and Maguire tied for 49th (227).
In addition to UNF's competitive lineup, a quartet of Osprey linksters competed as individuals in the event. Senior Joe Byun, the 2010 medalist at the Hayt Invitational, and freshman Joey Petronio finished the event tied for 36th at 224. Brant DeLongy tied for 82nd (242) while Joey Marino was 87th (252).
“We got off to the great start we were looking for going 10-under on the front nine,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “Our back nine was solid but unfortunately Arkansas closed with a performance similar to our start. Overall, it was a great team finish and a step in right direction for our spring season. The Kevins (Aylwin and Phelan) both had great weeks which was good to see.”
Arkansas earned their second straight Hayt Invitational title following a final round seven-under 281. The Razorbacks became just third team to defend their title after finishing with a 54-hole total of 872. UCF was second at 876 followed by UNF, Coastal Carolina (883), North Texas (885), TCU (885), Tennessee (886), LSU (887), Jacksonville (888), UAB (892), Tulsa (892), Ole Miss (900), Georgia Southern (907), Furman (908) and Mercer (910).
TCU's Julien Bren edged Horned Frog teammate Johan de Beer by one shot, 211-212, to capture the individual medalist crown. Arkansas' Ethan Tracy was third at 213.
The Ospreys next return to competition Mar. 11-12 at the General Hackler Championship hosted by Coastal Carolina in Murrells Inlet, S.C.
