
Softball Splits on Opening Day

CLERMONT, Fla. – University of North Florida softball split on its season-opener, defeating Bethune-Cookman 8-5 to start the day and falling to North Carolina 3-0 at the Dot Richardson Collegiate Invitational.
In Game One, not one UNF batter struck out as the Ospreys recorded 13 hits.
UNF got runs in each of the first three innings. Jackie Reese put UNF up 1-0 in the first inning when she cross home plate. In the second inning, Chie Someya brought home Stephanie McAdam with a two-out RBI single to center field to put UNF up 2-0. With runners on first and second in the third, Brittany Hendrix scored on a Lauren Pollack RBI single. A wild pitch put runners at second and third for Megan Mihalik, whose fly ball was far enough for Kelly Dill to score and give UNF a 4-0 advantage.
A three-run fifth inning allowed the Ospreys to go up 7-0. Both Dill and Pollack scored on RBI singles. Someya's two-out RBI double allowed for Alyson Bailey to score.
However, all five of Bethune-Cookman's run came in the bottom of the fifth. Aurelia Gamch's double brought in two runs for the Lady Wildcats. Cesley Tafoya's two-out double allowed for Gamch to score. The Lady Wildcats' final two runs of the inning came on illegal pitches and cut UNF's lead to 7-5.
After a scoreless sixth inning, UNF got a three-run cushion in the top of the seventh when Mariah Reynolds scored on a Danica Mandarano RBI single.
Thomas, Pollack, Mihalik and Someya all registered two hits in the game. Dill scored two runs, while Mihalik and Someya each had two RBI.
Kaylie Wallace (1-0) earned the win after pitching 4.2 innings. Wallace had two strikeouts and allowed four runs off eight hits. Kayla Goff came in for the final 2.1 innings, striking out one and allowing one run and two hits.
Gamch threw 2.1 innings in getting the loss. Gamch allowed four runs off five hits and had one walk.
Against North Carolina in Game Two, the Ospreys gave up a run in the first inning and then two in the third. Ally Blake scored on a Haleigh Dickey RBI single in the first. In the third, Blake had a lead-off double and then Dickey walked to set up two runners on base for Jenna Kelly, whose RBI double brought home Blake and moved Dickey to third. Jordan Scarboro's sac fly to right field was just far enough to bring in Dickey.
Dill and Mandarano were the only Ospreys to get a hit in the game with each having one.
Goff (0-1) received the loss after she pitched all six innings with seven strikeouts, allowing three runs off eight hits.
Lori Spingola (1-0) had the win. In seven innings, she struck out 13 and gave up two hits.
UNF continues play at the Dot Richardson Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. The Ospreys face Florida A&M at 11 a.m., for their first game and then Ohio State at 3 p.m.
