JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida men's tennis began its two-match weekend with a 5-2 victory over NCAA Division II's No. 2 Barry on Friday at the UNF Tennis Complex.
“Our guys are believing in the program,” said head coach Adam Schaechterle. “We put together our most complete match of the spring, and showed a growing toughness today. I was especially proud to see us win all three second sets on courts where we lost the first.”
With wins at No.2 and No. 3 doubles, the Ospreys secured the doubles point.
Norbert Nemcsek and
Daniel Sotomarino pulled off a thrilling 9-7 triumph against Leo Vivas and Francisco Sigaud at No. 2.
Moritz Buerchner and
Leonardo Nahar posted an 8-5 victory over Romain Costamagna and Ollie Lemaitre at No. 3 doubles. In the No. 1 spot,
Julien Belair and
Beauregard Treyz fell 8-5 to Marco Mokrzycki and Daniel Schmidt.
UNF came back to force tie-breaker sets in three of the singles matches. At No. 1 singles, Buerchner dropped the first set to Mokrzycki, who ranked No. 8 nationally in Division II, 6-4 before coming back to win 6-4, 6-3.
Graham Edgar took his No. 6 singles match against Vivas to the limit, falling 7-5 in the first set and coming back with 6-3, 6-3 scores in the last two sets. Nahar came back at No. 5 singles after dropping the first set 6-4 to Fabian Groetsch and won the second 6-3, but lost in the final set 7-5.
Nemcsek also saw his match at No. 2 singles go to three sets, but ended up falling to Schmidt. He won the first set 7-6 (5), Schmidt took the final two 7-5 and 10-8.
Sotomarino and Belair also registered singles wins on the day. Sotomarino defeated Costamagna 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Belair took the No. 4 slot against Kevin Sielmann 6-4, 6-1.
UNF returns to action on Sunday when the Ospreys host Armstrong Atlantic State, who is ranked No. 3 nationally in Division II. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the UNF Tennis Complex.
