SAVANNAH, Ga. – University of North Florida women's basketball returns to the hardwood on Monday night with its first out-of-Florida trip of the season when the Ospreys face Savannah State.
“It will be a very competitive game tomorrow night; Savannah State always plays tough at home,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “They have several talented transfers and a very good returning scorer in Ezinne Kalu. We look to continue to improve with each nonconference game we play in order to be ready for Atlantic Sun play.”
The Ospreys aim to get their first road win of the season and rebound from a loss at USF on Dec. 1. With exams taking place last week, Monday night is the UNF's first game since Dec. 1.
“This couple of weeks right after exams is one of my favorite times of the year for the girls,” said Tappmeyer. “The girls work hard during the semester with their classes and their responsibilities as student-athletes. The next few weeks, it's just B-F-S – basketball, food, and sleep.”
An Osprey has recorded a double-double in each of UNF's last two games. Raneisha Lamar had a 15-point, 10-rebound performance against Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 28, while Fabiola Josil tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds at USF.
UNF has already faced a MEAC team this season, defeating Bethune-Cookman 56-55 on Nov. 28 during Elementary School Day at UNF Arena. In addition to Monday night, UNF hosts the MEAC's University of Maryland Eastern Shore later in the week during the Hampton Inn Oceanfront Holiday Classic.
Savannah State wraps up a three-game homestand on Monday night with its first of two-straight games against Atlantic Sun teams. The Lady Tigers attempt to bounce back from a loss to Hampton last Monday. Ezinne Kalu enters the game averaging a time-best 15.0 ppg behind 55.6 percent (40-for-72) shooting from the field and 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from long range.
The series between UNF and Savannah State is tied at 5-5. In last year's game, Savannah State had a 64-61 overtime win at UNF Arena during the Ospreys' Elementary School Day.
Tip-off for Monday night's game is set for 7 p.m., at Tiger Arena.
