JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Wednesday will bring a little bit of a different atmosphere to UNF Arena when the University of North Florida women's basketball team hosts Bethune-Cookman at 11 a.m. The Ospreys will host over 900 students for Elementary School Day.
“It is always a fun and exciting time when you play in front of young kids,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “It doesn't matter what happens on the court, the kids are always cheering and make it an enjoyable time.”
It is the second time that UNF is sponsoring an Elementary School Day. Last year, the Ospreys packed UNF Arena with local elementary school students for their home-opener against Savannah State on Nov. 16, 2011. As part of the field trip, each student receives a math workbook related to basketball and their grade level.
Wednesday's game is UNF's second home game of the season and UNF is an all-time 182-102 at UNF Arena. The Ospreys come off a thrilling 64-61 victory over Vermont on Saturday. Ki Conner scored 11 of her 14 points – including three of her four treys – in the final 7:16 to help spearhead an Osprey second-half rally. Meanwhile, free throws were a key factor down the stretch with Jadhken Kerr knocking down three in the last 34 seconds that ended up being the game-winners.
Bethune-Cookman enters Wednesday in search of their first win on the road and against an Atlantic Sun team of the season. The Lady Wildcats' two previous road games have been at A-Sun foes Jacksonville and Stetson. Chastity René Taylor and Amanda Hairston both enter Wednesday averaging 15.0 and 14.0 ppg, respectively. Nearly half of Taylor's field goals on the season have been long range, while Hairston has a big presence in the paint, shooting 65.9 percent (29-for-44) and averaging 8.6 rpg.
“Bethune-Cookman is a good team that has several solid offensive and defensive players that we will have to account for,” said Tappmeyer. “It will be a challenging game, but we are coming off a great win on Saturday and hope to build on our momentum. Our team is starting to click and tomorrow's game, with the atmosphere, should be a lot of fun.”
