WINDERMERE, Fla. – The No. 41 ranked North Florida golf team closed out their fall schedule with a 10th place finish Tuesday at the prestigious Isleworth Collegiate Invitational held at Isleworth Country Club.
The Ospreys posted a final round 308 and finished with a three-day total of 901. The tournament field at Isleworth was highly competitive with 13 of the 15 teams ranked among the Top 50 in the nation.
Senior Kevin Phelan led the way for UNF finishing among the Top 10 individuals. Phelan was tied for ninth with a tournament total 219 (+3) highlighted by an even-par 72 in the final round.
Sophomore MJ Maguire finished tied for 26th at 223 while fellow sophomore Joey Petronio and freshman Joe Stepnes tied for 60th at 233. Redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock rounded out the Osprey lineup finishing tied for 66th at 235.
"We played really poorly today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "It was a rough way to finish up what was a pretty solid fall semester. Hopefully this will be something that will make us work harder during the break and get us ready for a great spring. We have talent on this team, but it is really young, so I'm excited to watch and see how we improve."
The nation's top ranked squad, California, led wire-to-wire in claiming the team championship with a 54-hole tally of 868, two strokes ahead of No. 7 New Mexico at 870. No. 10 Alabama was third at 873 followed by No. 2 Texas (879), No. 31 Illinois (882), No. 6 Florida (886), No. 13 Arkansas (892), No. 14 Vanderbilt/No. 11 LSU (899), North Florida, No. 77 Augusta State/No. 42 UCF (904), TCU (906), No. 40 Texas Tech (907) and No. 22 Indiana (927).
Cal's Michael Kim earned the individual medalist with a final total of 212 (-4).
North Florida will now be off from competition for three months before returning to the links Feb. 9-10, 2013 at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
