FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team played Florida Gulf Coast even for 66 minutes before a late rally by the Eagles saw the home team net a pair of goals and claim a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex. During the match, goalie Brad Sienkiewicz tied the UNF school record with 12 saves.
Defensively, Sienkiewicz took the hard-luck loss at goal. The goalie worked 90 minutes between the posts, allowing two goals, but notching 12 saves. Sienkiewicz's 12 saves bests Kyle Nasta's 11 saves earlier in the year against San Diego State on Sept. 16. Twelve saves ties a North Florida school record for most saves in a match set by Andrew Calise (2007-10) who recorded 12 saves at Mercer on Oct. 4, 2007. The match marks the fifth time this season the Ospreys have notched double-digit saves.
Offensively, North Florida was unable to push a goal across the scoreboard. Freshman Alex Morrell took all three shots on the afternoon for the Ospreys, including a shot on goal. All three of Morrell's shots came in the second half, but his attempts were thwarted by the FGCU defense.
The first half was a defensive struggle for both teams. Florida Gulf Coast recorded nine saves in the first half, including eight shots on goal. Sienkiewicz boasted eight saves in the first period to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
The second half was similar for the first 20 minutes. Florida Gulf Coast's Felipe DeSousa broke the scoreless tie in the 67th minute. FGCU's Federico Crespo sent a pass to DeSousa who one-touched a chip shot over the head of the goalkeeper from inside five yards.
The Eagles added an insurance goal in the 86th minute. Juan Castellon took a pass from Henry Penagos. Castellon finished with a one-on-one against the goalie. He chipped the ball over a diving keeper to extend the advantage to 2-0.
FGCU took 12 shots in the second half with six shots on goal. Sienkiewicz tied the North Florida school record for saves in a match, registering four saves in the second half to boost his total to 12.
North Florida returns to action with a home soccer match against Mercer on Thursday, Oct. 18, at Hodges Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
