JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Four players reached double digits for the North Florida basketball team led by 20 from Parker Smith as the Ospreys routed Atlantic Sun foe Lipscomb, 82-61, Wednesday night at UNF Arena.
UNF (8-8, 2-1 ASun) blistered the nets at a 59.6 percent clip and connected on eight three-pointers including Smith's 5-for-5 performance from long distance to earn the win over the Bison (7-9, 2-2).
For the second time in three conference games this season, UNF posted a 20+ point margin of victory and the win was the Ospreys seventh at home this year setting a new program high in the Division I era.
Joining Smith in double figures were Jimmy Williams with 15, Charles McRoy with 12 and 10 by Travis Wallace. The Ospreys also out-rebounded Lipscomb, 37-28, and held the Bison to just 38 percent shooting from the floor.
Jordan Burgason finished with 19 points to pace the Lipscomb attack.
“I'm proud of how our guys performed tonight,” said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. “They did a great job of executing the game plan especially defensively in the second half. I thought we really limited the looks that their shooters got. We were also very unselfish and moved the ball around allowing guys to take and make open shots.”
After trading baskets through the opening minutes, North Florida scored 13 straight points to seize control of the game. Smith keyed the surge hitting a trio of three-pointers in a two-minute span.
The Ospreys maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the game leading by as many as 19 points, 29-10, midway through the period. The Bison pulled within 12 with 6:26 left in the half, but another Smith trifecta halted any Lipscomb rally.
North Florida held a 47-28 lead at the half. UNF connected on 18 of 29 shot attempts (62.1 percent) in the half highlighted by a 5-for-10 (50 percent) performance from long distance.
UNF put the game out of reach early in the second half following a 17-6 run to start the frame. Smith's fifth trey of the night capped the run and put the Ospreys up by 30, 64-34, with 14:16 remaining.
In addition to his double-digit scoring performance, Williams also led the Ospreys in rebounding with 9 while handing out three assists and nabbing four steals. He also treated fans to a pair of highlight reel dunks including a baseline alley-oop from Wallace.
North Florida next hits the road for the first time in Atlantic Sun play visiting Florida Gulf Coast (Saturday) and then Stetson (Jan. 9).
