Ospreys Advance to A-Sun Finals; Sets-up Rematch

DeLAND, Fla. – With a 4-0 sweep, No. 3 seeded University of North Florida defeated No. 2 seeded Campbell on Friday afternoon to advance to the finals of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday at 10 a.m. to face No. 1 seeded ETSU.
The Ospreys and the Bucs meet for the second straight year after squaring off in the 2010 A-Sun title match with UNF notching the 4-1 win and earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
UNF put on a powerful display in closing out the Camels quickly in both singles and doubles. Simona Weymar and Aline Berkenbrock beat Lisa Sutton and Dominek Wallaart 8-4 at No. 1 doubles to begin the competition; Melanie Aguirre and Danielle Day soon followed with an 8-6 win on Court 2 against Karolina Chernaya and Borislava Nikolova to give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead in the match.
Aguirre, Victoria Krook and Weymar dispatched, respectively, Nikolova, Heather Robinson and Anais Gomar through the middle of the singles lineup, ending the match in UNF's favor 4-0.
In the No. 3, Krook defeated Nikolova, 6-2, 6-1 while Aguirre claimed a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 4. Weymar secured a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gomar at No. 5.
The Ospreys, who had to defeat No. 6 seeded Jacksonville in yesterday's quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals, become the first team seeded third or lower to make the A-Sun finals in women's tennis since 2005, when fourth seed FAU defeated No. 3 Stetson in the championship match.
UNF defeated ETSU meet in the A-Sun tournament final for the second year in a row at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The winner will receive the A-Sun's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
