JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida softball team (17-18) split its second consecutive doubleheader on Tuesday against Bethune-Cookman (12-20) at the UNF Softball Complex.
After dropping game one to the Wildcats by a score of 5-1, the Ospreys relied on seventh-inning heroics by freshman Mariah Reynolds to bring in the game-winning run with her one-out double.
Up next, North Florida returns to Atlantic Sun Conference play as the squad hits the road for four consecutive doubleheaders, beginning with USC Upstate on April 1 in Spartanburg, S.C. The first pitch of game one is slated for 4 p.m.
GAME ONE
Senior Caroline Torre grabbed her program-leading 1,000th putout in the first inning on the second out of game one, which was a routine groundout to third base. Unfortunately, North Florida allowed three runs in the first frame and the Wildcats never looked back as Bethune-Cookman claimed the contest, 5-1.
The Wildcats' Chastity Sanders (4-4) picked up the win for her squad after working four innings and allowing the only Osprey run on three hits.
North Florida cut into the 3-0 lead after plating one run in the third inning. With two quick outs, freshman Brittany Hendrix lined a single up the middle and then stole second. Hendrix would score from second after junior Alyson Bailey singled up the middle.
Bethune-Cookman added two more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 5-1, which would be the final score.
Junior Richelle Raley (0-4) remained winless after being tagged with the loss, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing all five runs – three earned – on 10 hits.
GAME TWO
In game two, freshman Mariah Reynolds delivered a one-out walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the Ospreys over the Wildcats, 6-5 in a back-and-forth game. It was the second walk-off hit over the past three games for North Florida.
With the game tied at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh, freshman Brittany Hendrix belted a leadoff single between the third baseman and shortstop, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Reynolds then came to the plate and landed the eventual game-winning hit on the line in left field, plating Hendrix from second.
The Ospreys took the early lead, 2-0, after the first frame but the lead was cut to just one after the Wildcats plated its first run of the game in the third inning. In the top of the fourth, North Florida lost the lead after Bethune-Cookman plated three runs, but the Ospreys tied it back up immediately in the bottom half of the frame at 4-4.
Again, Bethune-Cookman took the lead right back in the fifth, 5-4, before the Ospreys answered in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.
Coming in as a reliever, freshman Cortney Radke (15-11) earned the win, pitching just 0.2 innings and allowing no runs, no hits and striking out one batter.
Also in relief, Bethune-Cookman's Allison Garcia (7-7) picked up the loss after allowing three runs – two earned – on seven hits in four innings of work.
