The Ospreys return to Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium after a six-day road trip in which UNF played five games. North Florida started the road trip with a 9-8 loss to UNC Wilmington before snapping its four game skid with an 11-7 victory over the Seahawks. The Ospreys downed Atlantic Sun Conference foe USC Upstate 14-5 in the first game of a three-game conference series. North Florida won the series 2-1, splitting with the Spartans in a doubleheader on the final day (L, 0-2; W, 12-11).
North Florida and FIU have met three times in school history with the Panthers holding a 2-1 (.667) advantage in the series. UNF is 1-0 (1.000) all-time against FIU in Jacksonville.
North Florida won the first ever meeting between the two schools, edging out FIU, 5-4, on Mar. 17, 2008 at Harmon Stadium. The next year, the Ospreys dropped a pair of games to the Panthers in Miami. North Florida lost 10-6 on Mar. 17, 2009 and 3-0 on Mar. 18, 2009.
FIU is the second team this season the Ospreys will face from Florida. North Florida opened the conference season against Florida Gulf Coast. UNF dropped the first game of the series (L, 4-8) before claiming the second game (W, 10-3). In the rubber match, the Ospreys led 4-0 but ultimately fell, 5-4 in a season-high 13 innings.
Scouting the Opposition:
FIU enters the midweek series with a 13-8 overall record and a 1-2 mark in Sun Belt Conference play. The Panthers enter the series on a two-game skid, dropping the final two games of a conference series with Florida Atlantic.
The Panthers are in a bit of a slump, dropping six of their last eight ball games. However, FIU has played some perennial baseball powers in that stretch, losing games to Rice, Texas A&M (twice) and Baylor.
FIU is 11-2 at home, but is just 2-6 away from Miami. The Panthers have been on the road since Mar. 9 – eight games – heading into the series with UNF.
