Ospreys Edged 2-1 by Buccaneers

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of North Florida baseball team battled hard, but fell 2-1 on the road to Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
Starting pitcher Paul Karmeris took the hard luck loss for the Ospreys. The sophomore transfer tossed 6.0 innings, surrendering just five hits. Karmeris allowed just a pair of runs with just one earned run. He fanned seven batters while only walking one.
Tommy Organ and Chandler Jagodzinski both pitched in relief combining for two scoreless innings. Organ struck out a pair of batters in 1.2 innings of work.
Offensively, North Florida collected only five hits on the day. Michael Smith and T.J. Gavlik each had a double apiece, while Alex Bacon had a single and a run scored. Corey Bass finished the game with a walk, a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
For the second day in a row, the Ospreys were the first team to score. Bacon led off the second inning with a single to right center field. Bacon advanced to third on a one-out double by Gavlik. Bass drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, giving North Florida a 1-0 advantage.
Paul Karmeris made short work of the Buccaneers in the second inning with a one-two-three inning, sitting each batter down in order on strikes.
Paul Karmeris worked out of a jam in the third inning. After surrendering a leadoff double, he proceeded to strike out the next batter on four pitches. With a runner on second base and one out, the sophomore induced a shallow fly ball to right field for the second out of the inning. With two outs and the runner still on second base, Paul Karmeris induced a ground ball to escape the inning unscathed.
In the fourth inning, Paul Karmeris led off the inning by striking out the first batter. A single to third base gave the home team a runner on first base. A ground out to the pitcher moved the runner into scoring position with two outs. Paul Karmeris used a fly ball to left field to end the inning, leaving the score 1-0 in favor of the Ospreys.
The Ospreys threatened in the fifth inning. Andrew Hannon singled to get things going for North Florida. Andrew Karmeris singled up the middle with two outs to give UNF runners on the corners, but a fly ball ended the inning and the Ospreys' threat.
Charleston Southern led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk to start things off – the first walk of the game by the Ospreys. Paul Karmeris used a strikeout to record the first out of the inning, but a wild pitch during the at bat moved the base runner into scoring position. For the third straight inning, Paul Karmeris was able to work out of a jam. A ground out to first base left the Buccaneers with a runner on third and two outs. Paul Karmeris was able to get the next batter to ground out to end the inning and the scare.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the lead off batter singled up the middle to give the Buccaneers a base runner. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position. For the fourth consecutive inning, Charleston Southern put a runner in scoring position. An infield single and a throwing error by the Ospreys gave the home team runners on second and third with just one out. A wild pitch scored the first run of the game for the Buccaneers and a bloop single to shallow center field allowed CSU to take a 2-1 advantage. The Ospreys used a groundout to record the second out of the inning and a fly ball to right field ended the inning.
The Ospreys managed a base runner in the seventh and eighth inning, but were unable to score any runs. Neither team was able to score in the final three innings, giving the Buccaneers a 2-1 victory.
North Florida and Charleston Southern will conclude the three-game tilt with a single game on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 2:00 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
