
UNF Falls on the Road to ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team fell to Atlantic Sun foe East Tennessee State, 74-52 on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
Leading the Ospreys (11-13, 9-6 A-Sun) with 11 points was Brittany Kirkland. Juliemay Syquio, Taylor Smith and Jadhken Kerr added six points each. Syquio also dished out four assists while Larkira Jones pulled down 11 rebounds.
The Lady Bucs (15-10, 12-4 A-Sun) were led by Natalie Pickwell with 24 points. Latisha Belcher added 14 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Tara Davis had 12 points and six assists. Gwen Washington tallied 10 points.
Both teams got off to a quick start, trading baskets early. The Lady Bucs held a one point, 15-14 advantage at the 12:51 mark before going on a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 13 point, 29-16 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the half. The Ospreys scored the next four points to get the lead down to 29-19, but ETSU closed out the half outscoring UNF 11-5 to take a 16 point, 40-24 lead into the break.
The Lady Bucs continued their run coming out of the break and extended the lead to 20 (49-29) at the first media timeout. ETSU took its largest lead of the game, 71-39 with 7:14 on the clock. The Ospreys would get no closer in the second half than 22 in the final minute.
ETSU connected on 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field while the Ospreys shot just 27.9 percent (19-of-68). The Lady Bucs hit 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from behind arc to UNF's 26.1 percent (6-of-23). From the free throw line, ETSU went 16-of-22 (72.7 percent) and UNF hit 8-of-20 (40 percent).
The Lady Bucs edged UNF in the rebounds, pulling down 49 to the Ospreys' 45. Both teams tallied 17 turnovers and 17 points off of turnovers.
UNF will be back on the court on Monday, Feb. 14 at USC Upstate. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the G.B. Hodge Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
