MIAMI, Fla. – After nearly three hours of rain delays on the second day of the Combat Classic in Miami, Fla., the North Florida softball team dropped its Saturday game to No. 22 Ohio State, 10-1, at the FIU Softball Complex. The Ospreys fall to 0-3 on the young season, while the Buckeyes improve to 2-2 on the year.
Ohio State struck first in the first inning, scoring the runner on second on a single up the middle of the field. The Buckeyes combined for five more runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead, essentially putting the game nearly out of reach.
The big play in the fourth belonged to Ohio State senior Brittany Goodchild when she hit a double and then advanced to third on a throwing error, eventually scoring on a double steal. Goodchild went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI, a double and one strikeout.
The Ospreys' looked to be getting some spark in the bats when junior Kelly Dill belted the first homerun of the season for the Ospreys in the bottom of the fifth inning. It was the first run of the season for the North Florida squad. With runners on the corners and two outs, the Ospreys had a shot to cut into the lead but a hard liner to shortstop by freshman Mariah Reynolds ended the rally.
Four more runs added in the top of the seventh by Ohio State all but put away the North Florida squad. The Ospreys would fly out, ground out, fly out to end the game.
Freshman Cortney Radke (0-3) was tabbed with her third loss of the year, although she fanned a season-high seven batters. Senior Karisa Medrano (1-1) earned the win, striking out three, walking three and allowing just two hits on the night.
North Florida's game against No. 35 Kentucky has been rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. (ET) and the Ospreys will play No. 34 Florida International immediately after at 3 p.m. (ET) to round up this weekend's tournament play.
