Volleyball Meets FGCU in A-Sun Tournament Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time in six days, the North Florida volleyball team faces Florida Gulf Coast on the court as the two rivals meet Thursday at 5 p.m. (CT) in the opening round of the 2011 Atlantic Sun Championship at Lipscomb's Allen Arena.
The Ospreys (14-16, 5-8 Atlantic Sun) are making their second consecutive appearance in the conference postseason after securing the No. 6 seed with their 3-1 victory over Stetson last Saturday. FGCU, the No. 3 seed, finished the regular season at 17-12 overall and 10-3 in conference play.
UNF closed the regular season winning six of their last eight while also establishing a new single season high for wins under head coach Kevin Campbell. The five A-Sun victories also marked the highest total since winning nine league tilts in 2008.
Earlier this week, junior Paige Pridgeon was named an ASun All-Conference (second team) selection while freshman setter Casey Giovanazzi earned a spot on the league's All-Freshmen team. In addition, junior Nicole Baran was picked to the inaugural Academic All-Conference squad.
Pridgeon, who has been an All-Conference selection in each of her three seasons at UNF, ranks fifth in the A-Sun for kills at 3.32 per set. Giovanazzi finished the season ranked fifth in the league with 9.21 assists per set and Baran ranked fourth in the Atlantic Sun with 4.24 digs per set.
As a team, UNF ranks third in the conference in blocking at 1.80 blocks per set and is holding opponents to a .194 hitting percentage, also third best in the league. A trio of Osprey players are listed among the league's elite in blocking with Jenkins ranked second (0.95 bps), Marija Pantovic 13th (0.74) and Dagnija Medina 18th (0.62).
FGCU holds an 11-2 advantage in the all-time series against UNF including a sweep of the team's two regular season contests. In the first meeting, the Eagles won in three sets with a point differential of just nine total points separating the squads. In the rematch, last Friday night in Jacksonville, the Ospreys held a 2-1 set advantage before FGCU rallied for the five-set victory including a 15-12 score in the final set.
The winner of the UNF-FGCU match advances to Friday's semifinal match against second-seeded and tournament host Lipscomb at 5 p.m. (CT). The championship match is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. (CT).
The Atlantic Sun Conference tournament is Nov. 17-19 in Nashville, Tenn. All the matches during the championship will be carried live and free of charge on ASun.TV.
