NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of North Florida volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Thursday night with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 11-25, 25-27) loss to Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament held at Lipcomb's Allen Arena.
Carolyn Jenkins recorded 12 kills and six blocks for the Ospreys (14-17). Casey Giovanazzi put up 35 assists, while Nicole Baran came up with 24 digs.
Jill Hopper (13 kills, 19 digs) and Gigi Meyer (36 assists, 10 digs) each had a double-double for the Eagles (18-2). Kaitlin Holm added 12 kills, while Holly Youngquist chipped in with 22 digs.
UNF came back late in the first set, but was unable to hold off the Eagles. With Florida Gulf Coast up by five late into the set, a kill by Giovanazzi sparked a six-point run that allowed the Ospreys to take a 22-21 lead. However, the Eagles closed out the set with a four-point run to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The Ospreys powered their way to a second set victory by hitting .412 for the set and connecting for 18 kills on 34 attacks with only four errors. UNF scored 13 of its first 16 points on either Osprey kills or aces en route to taking a 16-8 lead. Although the Eagles tried to cut into UNF's lead, a Marija Pantovic kill clinched the set win for the Ospreys and evened the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Florida Gulf Coast used several long runs, including a 6-0 run in the beginning and a 7-0 streak midway through, to win the set and take a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The fourth set was a battle with neither team able to get a significant lead. The set included 16 ties. With the score deadlocked at 20-all, kills by Cameron McGuire and Jenkins put UNF up by two. However, Florida Gulf Coast responded with a four-point run to take a two-point lead of its own. UNF would force two more ties -- one at 24-24 on a McGuire kill and a second at 25-25 on a McGuire-Jenkins block -- but the Eagles scored the set's final two points to take the set and the match.
During the 2011 season, UNF established a new single season high for wins under head coach Kevin Campbell. Paige Pridgeon and Giovanazzi were named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference Team, while Baran was named to the league's first-ever Academic All-Conference Team.
