JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team hosts a pair of key Atlantic Sun Conference matches against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson in the final weekend of regular season play. UNF faces FGCU at 7 p.m. Friday before meeting Stetson at 3 p.m. Saturday in UNF Arena.
The Ospreys (13-15, 4-7 Atlantic Sun) are currently tied with crosstown rival Jacksonville for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming conference tournament. However, UNF holds the tiebreaker with the Dolphins after earning the season sweep over their rivals last Friday night.
UNF has won five of its last six matches and needs just one more victory to establish a new single season high for wins under head coach Kevin Campbell. Another win would also eclipse the Ospreys mark for A-Sun victories in either of the past two seasons.
Junior Carolyn Jenkins was named the A-Sun Player of the Week after leading the Ospreys to a come-from-behind victory over JU. Jenkins, who ranks second in the conference at 0.91 blocks per set, recorded a team best 14 kills and five blocks.
Fellow junior Paige Pridgeon ranks fifth in the A-Sun for kills at 3.34 per set and 18th in digs with 2.86 dps. Freshman setter Casey Giovanazzi is listed fifth in assists with 9.16 per set, while junior libero Nicole Baran ranks fourth in the Atlantic Sun with 4.25 digs per set.
As a team, UNF ranks third in the conference in blocking at 1.80 blocks per set and is holding opponents to a .194 hitting percentage, also third best in the league. A trio of Osprey players are listed among the league's elite in blocking with Jenkins ranked second (0.91 bps), Marija Pantovic 13th (0.76) and Dagnija Medina 17th (0.65).
FGCU enters Friday's tilt at 15-11 overall and 8-3 in the conference. The Eagles hold a 10-2 advantage in the all-time series against UNF including a 3-0 victory earlier this season in Ft. Myers.
Stetson brings a 9-16 record (2-9 ASun) into the weekend's action and will play at JU on Friday before visiting UNF. The Ospreys lead the series with the Hatters, 11-3, including a 3-0 win on Sept. 23 in DeLand, Fla.
The Atlantic Sun Conference tournament is Nov. 17-19 in Nashville, Tenn., and will be hosted by Lipscomb.
