JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision (25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 22-25, 12-15) to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday evening at UNF Arena.
Junior Paige Pridgeon led a trio of UNF hitters in double digits finishing with 21 kills. Freshman Cameron McGuire added 13 kills, while junior Marija Pantovic chipped in 11 for UNF. Libero Nicole Baran led all Ospreys with 17 digs while freshman setter Casey Giovanazzi handed out 55 assists.
“We played some great volleyball, but we made a few too many errors in the fifth set to pull out a win,” said UNF head coach Kevin Campbell. “Overall it was a great match. We just fell a little short. The most important thing we can do right now is to come out and play well tomorrow against Stetson and make the conference tournament.”
North Florida opened the match with a tight victory, 25-23 in set one. Florida Gulf Coast jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead, but the Ospreys rallied for four consecutive points to tie the score at seven apiece. The Eagles stretched their lead back to four points at 17-13, but UNF answered to tie the score at 17-17. The two teams traded points, until FGCU took a 23-20 lead. Trailing by three, North Florida rattled off five consecutive points to claim the first set.
In set two, the Eagles jumped out to a 9-3 lead and did not look back. The Ospreys closed the gap to five points on three occasions but were unable to overcome the deficit, dropping the second frame 25-17.
After intermission, North Florida opened set three with a 4-0 run and extended its lead to as many as eight points (16-8). FGCU rallied to trim the UNF lead to just three points (21-18), but the Ospreys scored four of the final six points to claim the set 25-20.
The fourth set was back and fourth, featuring nine ties. Florida Gulf Coast led by four at 9-5, but North Florida outscored the Eagles 7-3 to tie the score at 12-12. The two teams traded points with neither team leading by more than two points. Knotted at 22-22, the Eagles used a pair of kills and a UNF error to force a fifth set.
In the final decisive set, neither team led by more than two points through the first 18 points of the match. Tied at 9-9, four straight errors by the Ospreys allowed the Eagles to take a 13-9 lead. Kills by Carolyn Jenkins and McGuire, along with a block by Jenkins and Pantovic pulled UNF to within two (14-12), but a FGCU kill ended the Osprey rally and the match.
North Florida concludes the regular season with a match against Stetson at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.
