
Ospreys to Host USC Upstate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a three game road swing, the University of North Florida women's basketball team will return home to host USC Upstate on Saturday, Jan. 15 in a 4:30 p.m. game at UNF Arena. It is a doubleheader with the UNF men's team which will tip-off against Upstate at 7 p.m.
The Ospreys (3-11, 1-4 A-Sun) are coming off a 57-53 win over Lipscomb. UNF and LU were tied in the final nine seconds, but freshman Jade Givens inbounded the ball to sophomore Larkira Jones for the lay-up. Givens turned around and stole the ball on the Bison's inbound before being fouled. She connected on a pair of free throws. The Bison inbounded the ball again, but Givens came up with a second steal to help secure the UNF win.
Leading UNF this season is junior Brittany Kirkland with 14.6 points per game. Sophomore Taylor Smith is adding 8.6 points per game and shooting 56.8 percent from the field. Jones leads the Ospreys on the boards, grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game.
The Spartans (7-6, 4-1 A-Sun) fell, 74-65, to Stetson in their last outing. Leading Upstate is Chelsea McMillan with 16.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. Tee'Ara is tallying 13.6 points per game and handing out 4.8 assists per game. Lauren McRoberts is adding 9.3 points per game.
UNF leads the all-time series 11-5, but Upstate picked up wins in the last two meetings. The Spartans won 70-58 at UNF Arena last season followed by a 65-59 win in Spartanburg, S.C. later in the season. Senior Juliemay Syquio averaged 11.0 points against the Spartans last season while Kirkland added 10.0 points per game.
Following Saturday's game, UNF will remain home to host East Tennessee State on Monday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in UNF Arena.
