BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a 6-0 loss to Memphis in the opening match of the UAB “Soccer for a Cure” Classic in Birmingham, Ala. on Friday night.
The Ospreys surrendered a pair of goals in the first half, and the Tigers never looked back, netting four more goals in the second stanza to take the commanding victory.
“It really hurt us losing [Andrew] Calise in the first 10 minutes of the match,” head coach Ray Bunch stated after the match. “[John] Davison has been our most solid backup in practice but just didn't have it tonight. Memphis was an excellent team and showed it tonight. They were faster than us, which helped them out, but we should have been able to stop some of those goals. We just have to come out here tomorrow and try to improve.”
North Florida could get very little going offensively. The Ospreys managed just five shots on the night, but did record three shots on goal.
Freshman Ricky Lawrence carried the momentum of the preseason into his first collegiate match, recording a shot on goal in the contest. Junior transfer Enrique Haeussler and freshman Josh Ciambella each added shots on goal on the night.
Senior captain Adam O'Neill and true freshman Austin Doyle each added shots for the Ospreys.
At goal, freshman John Davison led the way for the Ospreys with three saves, while freshman Tyler Willets did not allow a goal in 13 minutes of action, recording a save.
UNF starting goalkeeper Andrew Calise left the match six minutes into the opening half with an apparent leg injury. He did not return to the match.
Memphis scored two first half goals within 45 seconds of each other in the first half. The first goal was set up by some nifty passing when Maxin Van Dyck sent a cross to Hugo Mondragon. Mondragon then one-timed a centering pass to Tiago Reichert who then buried a shot for a one-goal Memphis lead.
A few second later, Liam Collins took the ball along the right sideline and sent a high cross to the far post. His cross went over the head of keeper and found the feet of Mondragon, who deposited a shot into an empty net for a two-goal cushion.
Third goal came from a long pass that from Van Dyck sprung Parker Duncan for a 1-on-1 with the UNF goalie. Duncan finished the shot into the lower far post.
Fourth goal was a penalty kick scored by Thomas Shannon, while the fifth goal was set up when Mondragon assisted on a goal from Shannon, who scored into the near post. The sixth and final goal scored off a cross with the header going just underneath the crossbar.
Memphis' six goals in the contest established a single-match record for a UAB “Soccer for a Cure” Classic match with five goals scored being the previous high set on five different occasions.
North Florida has a short turn around, as the Ospreys face tournament-host UAB in the final match of the UAB “Soccer” for a Cure” Classic on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 8:30 p.m. Live stats for the match are available here.
