SAN FRANCISCO – The University of North Florida women's soccer team mounted a strong second half surge but couldn't overcome a sluggish start in a 2-1 loss against the San Francisco Dons at Negoesco Stadium Friday night.
The Ospreys (0-2) controlled the play in the second half earning several strong scoring chances. Senior Lauren Maze tallied the squad's lone goal of the night in the 57th minute.
“I was very happy with the way we played in the second half,” said UNF head coach Linda Hamilton. “We dug ourselves an early hole after allowing a goal in the first five minutes and then gave up a late goal right before halftime. I thought we really battled after halftime and gave ourselves a chance. We just have to continue to work on playing all 90 minutes.”
The Dons (2-0) got on the board first at the 4:19 mark when Christina Moberg headed a ball off a short corner kick into the net. The two squads then battled back-and-forth until USF converted a goal off a free kick in the closing seconds of the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
UNF fought back and trimmed the deficit in half when Maze collected a pass from junior Denisse Soltero and slotted a shot past the diving keeper early in the second half. The goal was the first of the season for Maze and the Ospreys.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Dorsey pitched a shutout over the final 42 minutes of the second half for UNF, but the Osprey attack was not able to earn the equalizer as San Francisco held on for the victory.
North Florida continues its season-opening five match road stretch with a second game in California Sunday afternoon at St. Mary's College.
