PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Kevin Phelan finished with a 12-over, 83 on Thursday evening in the first round of the 110th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.
"Kevin did a good job competing today, but never really got into a rhythm," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "What an unbelievable experience he is having. The golf course is unreal and all that he is learning will only make him better."
Phelan, who is competing in his first major tournament, scored par on nine holes in the first round. Coming off of the 12th hole, Phelan was sitting at just 4-over, but struggled on five of the final six. He bogeyed on the 13th and 18th holes and double bogeyed the 14th, 16th and 17th.
He is 14 strokes behind leaders Shaun Micheel, Paul Casey and Brendon de Jonge who all carded 2-under, 69s for the opening round. Only 13 golfers finished with par or better in the round.
Phelan will tee off at 9:01 PST on Friday, June 18 in the second round of competition.
