BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The University of North Florida softball team was unable to put runs on the board, plating only two in a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference losses to Campbell. The Ospreys lost 3-1 in both games on Friday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.
The Ospreys (23-24, 9-7 A-Sun) were unable to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball, scattering eight hits and leaving nine runners stranded on base. Despite the team's .160 batting average on the day, junior Caroline Torre and sophomore Britanie Block had two hits each. Block hit her second home run of the season.
Campbell (17-25-1, 4-6 A-Sun) started the afternoon with two quick runs in the first inning off of three hits. Sarah Forgacs led off the inning with a bunt single followed by another bunt single by Katie Hinton, resulting with runners on first and second.
Senior Devyn Findley recorded back-to-back strikeouts for the first and second outs in the inning, but Tayor McGee took advantage of the opportunity and hit a double to the gap in left field on a full count, scoring both runners for the 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning shortstop Block recorded the first hit for the Ospreys, but was left on base.
Campbell's Lauren Stephan (W, 1-2) recorded her first win of the season after tossing a complete game, allowing one unearned run on two hits and whiffing seven.
Findley (L, 17-13) pitched a complete game, but the Camels took advantage of runners in scoring position, scoring three runs on six hits. The left-hander was able to end the day with six strike-outs.
North Florida scored a run in the top of the seventh in its attempt to once again comeback for the win in the final inning, but failed, only mustering one hit in the inning provided by Torre.
The second game for the Ospreys was not much better. Though the Ospreys recorded six hits against Brittany Stanley (W, 7-9), she only allowed them to tally more than one hit in an inning during the fifth. Block scored the Ospreys' only run in the second game with a solo blast in the top of the fifth.
Campbell's pitcher Brittany Arnn recorded her second save of the season, holding North Florida to no hits and no runs, in the final two innings of game two.
The Ospreys will be back in action to play Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Thursday, April 22, at 4 p.m.
