UNF to Face Mercer in A-Sun Tournament First Round

No. 7 seeded UNF (10-19, 7-13 A-Sun) will face No. 2 Mercer (14-15, 11-9 A-Sun) with the winner advancing to the semifinals to face the winner of No. 3 Campbell vs. No. 6 Jacksonville.
“We're really excited to finally be eligible for postseason again after four years,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “I'm really happy for the seniors to have gotten to this point. It's going to be a big challenge to play the home team, but the best thing about the conference tournament is that everyone is starting new The records are 0-0.”
The Ospreys fell to the Bears in both contests during the regular season. Mercer defeated UNF 64-48 in
Junior guard Juliemay Syquio averaged 11 points, four rebounds and six assists against the Bears on the season. In the last meeting, Syquio had 14 points and sophomore forward Margaret Bell added 10 points while pulling down six rebounds.
The Bears were led by Courtney Ford and Neicey Lewis with 11 points each. Kourtney Carter added 10.
Sophomore guard Brittany Kirkland leads the Ospreys on the season, averaging 14.2 points per game and ranks in the top-5 in scoring in the Atlantic Sun. Syquio is adding 8.7 points per game and pulling down 5.9 rebounds per game while dishing out 4.0 assists per game (fifth in the A-Sun). Freshman forward Jadhken Kerr is adding 8.4 points per game while pouring in an A-Sun best 2.5 three pointers per game. Senior Arlande Cherizol is tallying 7.9 rebounds per game to rank sixth in the A-Sun.
Leading Mercer is Ford with 16.8 points, 3.9 assists and eight rebounds per game. LaToya Jackson is adding 13.1 points per game.
UNF is eligible for the postseason for the first time since beginning the reclassification, into NCAA Division I, four years ago. Mercer is hosting the A-Sun Championships with 2010 being the first of a two year bid.
