JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team shut out Samford, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex. UNF improves to 12-1 on the season while Samford falls to 8-5.
“Our girls played one of their best matches of the year today,” said head coach Rodrigo Puebla. “Samford always has a good team and this match could have gone either way. I am really proud of how our players responded to a tough team.”
The Ospreys picked up the doubles point to start the match. Sophomore Aline Berkenbrock and senior Raquel Castro teamed up at No. 1 to defeat Lindsey Mallory and Taylor Morgan, 8-3. Juniors Lauren Holton and Victoria Krook secured the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Madelie Janse Van Rensburg and Stephanie Parkinson.
Berkenbrock extended her win streak to 13 matches by defeating Morgan, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1. Castro also picked up a win at No. 2, defeating Andrie Meiring, 6-2, 6-3.
In the No. 4 match, Krook secured the match for the Ospreys with a deciding 6-1, 6-2, win over Parkison. Freshman Melanie Aguirre defeated Rebecca Kirven, 6-3, 6-4. at No. 5.
Sophomore transfer Danielle Day played a tough match at No. 3 before defeating Van Rensburg, 6-3, 4-6 (10-4). Holton wrapped up the scoring for the Ospreys with a 6-2, 6-4, win at No. 6 over Mallory.
“I would also like to thank Randy Jenks and the ladies from Eagle Harbor Country Club for coming out and supporting the team today,” Puebla said.
The Ospreys will be back on the court on Friday, March 19, when they travel to Kennesaw State for a 10 a.m. Atlantic Sun Conference match against the Owls. UNF will remain on the road to face A-Sun foe Mercer at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 20.
