UNF Softball Heads To Winthrop Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida softball team heads to Rock Hill, S.C. for the 2010 Winthrop Adidas Invitational on Friday-Sunday, March 12-14.

UNF (8-14) has played well of late, winning five of their last six games after splitting a double header with Memphis on Wednesday at the UNF Softball Complex. North Florida had two five-game winning streaks last season. The Memphis games were the last homes the team will enjoy in Jacksonville in the month of March.

Freshman Jackie Reese is batting .500 over the past seven games after her three home run weekend. Overall, junior first base man Caroline Torre leads the team with a batting average of .294 and also leads the team with 14 RBI after tying the first Memphis game with a home run.

Senior left-handed pitcher Devyn Findley evened her record at 7-7 with five strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings pitched against the Tigers. In the Atlantic Sun Conference, Findley is tied for fourth in wins and seventh in ERA (1.85) and strikeouts (113).

The Ospreys open tournament play at 10 a.m. on Saturday vs. Delaware State (6-2). The Hornets enter Rock Hill having won their last five neutral-site games. Delaware State's two losses came against Virginia, 7-0 and 9-0. Before their losses the Hornets enjoyed a five game winning streak with their last win coming vs. Columbia.

The Hornets currently carry a team batting average of .390, with six players hitting above .300. Infielder Tawney Reeger leads the team in batting average (.517), hits (15) and RBI (11). Rachel Carroll (.440), Janelle Lukens (.441) and Breanne Parr (.400) all have maintained their batting average at .400 or better.

After Delaware State, the Ospreys face host Winthrop (10-5) at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Eagles are 3-2 at home and have three players who are hitting over .300. Senior infielder Pearl Coleshill leads the Eagles in batting average (.435), runs (10) and hits (20). Ashleigh Jackson, though hitting just .214, leads the team in RBI and home runs, with three.

Winthrop, like the Ospreys, played in the Buzz Classic last weekend, and enjoyed four wins, beating Tennessee-Martin (5-3), Jacksonville State (6-0), Dartmouth (8-5) and Howard (5-1).

Eagles pitcher Cari Wooldridge was named to the All-Tournament Team, after tossing a complete game, allowing one run and scattering eight hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. She is 5-4 on the year.

Sunday's frst game for UNF will be at 1 p.m. against North Carolina State (13-9), who split a pair of games against Campbell this past Wednesday. Landon Warren and Stephanie Call have both stood out for the Wolfpack in the batter's box. Warren is hitting .379 with 25 hits, 16 runs scored and five doubles, all team bests, while Call's .754 slugging percentage, eight home runs and 21 RBI are team high's for the Pack.

Call (4-1) has also won three-straight starts in the circle for N.C. State. The Wolfpack's other pitcher, Lindsay Campana (8-3), has an 0.58 ERA through 73 innings, allowing only six earned runs. She has recorded 112 strikeouts, and ranks in the top third within the ACC in nearly every pitching statistic.

N.C. A&T (8-3) is the last team to make up pool A of the tournament and the Ospreys will face them at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Bianca Alsobrook leads the team with a .531 batting average and 11 RBI, while Yahamma White leads the team in hits (19) and is second in RBI (9).

Both pitchers for the Aggies have four wins, with Jennifer Luper (1.47 ERA) and Sasha Philpot (1.69 ERA) making up the artillery.
