Harrell, Hyams named Swimming and Diving Coaches of the Year
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team concluded competition at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association in fourth place, setting four records on the day. During the three-day meet, the Ospreys set 10 school records, registered two NCAA B-cut times and had two coaches named Coach of the Year.
The FloridaGulfCoast women and Davidson men won the 2010 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at the AllanJonesIntercollegiateAquaticCenter on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
The Eagles picked up a total of 831.5 points repeating at the women's champion. For the women, Davidson notched 637 points to finish second, followed by Gardner-Webb with 516.5 points. North Florida finished in fourth with 480 points, Georgia Southern fifth (429.5) and Campbell sixth (219.5). College of Charleston posted 196 points to finish seventh, while Howard was eighth with 105 points. Radford (104), North Carolina A&T (61), VMI (52) and Florida A&M (42) rounded out the final standings.
“I am very proud of the fact that they all swam so well. We broke 10 records, but its not even about the records. All the girls swam well. Last season, there was a controversy about the Lazer swimsuits. We broke 12 records last year, but I have always said it is the person in the suits and not the suits themselves. I think we proved that this year by breaking 10 records.”
Florida Gulf Coast coach, Neal Studd and North Florida coach Beth Harrell shared Women's Coach of the Year honors and Davidson coach, John Young took home Men's Coach of the Year. Coach Studd picks up his second coaches award in as many years. In addition, North Florida's Melisa Hyams grabbed the Women's Diving Coach of the Year for the first time since the 2008 season, while College of Charleston's Mike Diamond and Davidson's Aaron Hintz earned Co-Men's Diving Coach of the Year for the second-straight year.
“It is an honor to be recognized by my peers,” Harrell said of winning her third Coach of the Year accolade. “It was the swimmers that did well. I credit this award to their ability to swim well and get the job done.”
“It was a lot different than when I won this in the past,” diving coach Melisa Hyams said of winning her fourth conference Diving Coach of the Year award. “Julia was a true freshman walk on. She came in pretty raw after not diving much her senior. For her to come out and compete the way she did in conference is really a testament to her. I could not be happier for her.”
In the morning timed final for the 1,650-yard freestyle, junior Caroline Larsson broke junior Lyn Ann Nelson's school record that she set on Dec. 3, 2009 at the Savannah College of Art and Design Meet. Nelson regained the record by swimming a time of 17:03.94, which was good enough for second place. During the race, Nelson broke her won school record in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:16.88.
Sophomore Amanda Anderson earned All-Conference accolades with a first place finish in the 200 backstroke. She set the school record in the event with a time of 2:00.48, beating the previous record of 2:01.73 that was set by Shawna Bothwell (2001-05) in 2005.
True freshman Julia Moomaw earned All-CCSA honors with a third place finish in the three-meter diving.
