
UNF Falls to South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team fell to the Big East's University of South Florida, 68-35 on Sunday afternoon in Tampa, Fla. at the Sun Dome on the campus of USF.
Leading the Ospreys (1-7, 0-2 A-Sun) was Brittany Kirkland with 11 points. Megan Peterson added six while Larkira Jones notched five. Raneisha Lamar grabbed a team best five rebounds.
For the Bulls (6-4, 0-1 Big East), Andrea Smith led with 19 points, all scored in the first half. Daleisha Carn added 14 points. Porche Grant grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Ospreys took an early lead in the game, up 6-2 after two minutes of action, but the Bulls went on a 13-2 run over the next three and a half minutes to go up seven. UNF responded scoring the next five with Kirkland hitting a pair of free throws and a shot from outside to put the Ospreys within two (15-13) at the 12:58 mark. The Bulls went on a 22-4 run to close out the half and take a 20 point, 37-17 lead into the break.
The second half was much of the same as the Bulls came out and scored the first five before the Ospreys got on the board. UNF would get no closer than 22 in the second half and the Bulls would take their largest lead of the game in the final minute.
UNF hit 21.3 percent (10-of-47) from the field while USF hit 39.3 percent (24-of-61). Both teams struggled from outside the arc with the Ospreys going 4-of-16 for 25 percent while the Bulls hit 27.3 percent (3-of-11). The Bulls scored 25 points off turnovers and hit 15 second chance points after holding a 47-36 advantage on the boards.
The Ospreys will be back in action Dec. 18-19, hosting their annual holiday classic. UNF will face Troy on the opening day at 3 p.m.
