
Ospreys Host FGCU to Open A-Sun Schedule

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team is set to host Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m. The contest will be a doubleheader with the UNF men's team which will face FGCU at 7:45 p.m. at UNF Arena.
UNF (1-4, 0-0 A-Sun) fell to Savannah State, 49-42 in the team's last outing. Sophomore Larkira Jones posted her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Leading the team this season is junior Brittany Kirkland with 14.8 points per game while leading the team with 2.8 assists per game. Jones is grabbing a team-leading 8.2 rebounds per game. Senior Juliemay Syquio is notching a team high 2.4 steals per game and is second on the team in scoring with 8.0 points per game.
The Eagles (4-0, 0-0 A-Sun) are undefeated this season, last defeating Montana, 68-52. Shannon Murphy scored 21 points in the win. Murphy, along with Sarah Hansen, swept the A-Sun weekly awards this past week, winning Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, respectively.
FGCU is being led on the season by Kelsey Jacobson with 12.5 points per game. Murphy is adding 12 points per game while Hansen is notching 11.8 points per game while grabbing a team-high 5.8 rebounds. Courtney Chihil is tallying 5.25 assists per game.
This is the seventh meeting between the two teams. FGCU holds the series advantage at 4-2, but the Ospreys won the last meeting, claiming a 57-56 victory in UNF Arena last season. Three players hit double-digits for the Ospreys as Jadhken Kerr led with 14 points. Kirkland and Syquio added 13 points each.
Following Thursday's game, the Ospreys will continue conference play, hosting Stetson on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 4:30 p.m. This is also a double-header with the UNF men's team which will face the Hatters at 7 p.m.
