
UNF Falls to FGCU in A-Sun Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 73-51 on Thursday evening in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams.
UNF (1-5, 0-1 A-Sun) was led by Brittany Kirkland with 19 points. Juliemay Syquio added 10 points. Margaret Bell recorded a team and career-high eight rebounds. Syquio and Jade Givens dished out four assists each.
The Eagles (5-0, 1-0 A-Sun) were led by a trio of players in double digits. Sarah Hansen led with 24 points and eight rebounds. Shannon Murphy added 17 points and handed out six assists while Kelsey Jacobson had 11.
Both teams jumped out early in the first half and were tied at 13 after four and a half minutes of play, but the Eagles opened up the scoring with a 19-3 run that spanned seven minutes to take a 32-16 lead at the 8:12 mark. FGCU took its largest lead of the half at the end, going into the break with a 20 point, 47-27 lead.
The Eagles continued their run into the second half, taking their largest lead of the game, up 30 (63-33) with 13:18 on the clock. UNF would get no closer than 22 as the Eagles claimed the win.
UNF shot 29-percent (18-of-62) from the field, including 22.7-percent (5-of-22) from three point range. The Eagles shot 52-percent (26-of-50) from the field as a team including 44.4-percent (12-of-27) from behind the arc. Both teams were close on the rebounds with FGCU holding the slight, 39-38 advantage. UNF and FGCU were even on turnovers with 15 each.
The Ospreys will be back on the court on Saturday, Dec. 4 when they host conference opponent Stetson at 4:30 p.m. It will be a doubleheader with the UNF men's team which will play SU at 7 p.m.
