
Ospreys Fall to Bearcats

CINCINNATI – The University of North Florida women's basketball team was within eight in the second half, but a late run by the Big East's Cincinnati, secured the Bearcats a 61-42 win on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Arena in Cincinnati.
Leading the Ospreys (0-2) was senior Juliemay Syquio with 11 points. Margaret Bell added eight points and Brittany Kirkland tallied seven. Larkira Jones grabbed eight rebounds while Kim Baker had five.
The Bearcats (2-0) were led by Shareese Ulis with 15 points. Chanel Chisholm and Bjonee Reaves had eight points each. Jeanise Randolph and Kayla Cook each grabbed eight boards for the Bearcats.
In the opening half, the Ospreys got out to an early 10-2 lead were up by eight at the 16:38 mark. Cincinnati got the lead down to three (10-7) in the next minute, but the Ospreys extended their lead back five (12-7) with 13:39 on the clock. Both teams went scoreless over the next two minutes, but the Bearcats broke the drought at 11:51 to pull within two, 12-10. UNF and UC traded baskets over the next few possessions and were tied at 17 with 8:31 left in the half. The Bearcats closed out the half with a 15-5 run to take a 10 point, 32-22 lead into the break.
Following the break, the Ospreys cut the lead down to eight several times in the second half, trailing the Bearcats, 44-36 at the 8:29 mark. UC opened up the scoring with a 10-2 run to go up, 54-38 with 4:39 left in the half. The Bearcats continued their run and took their largest lead of the game up 23 (61-38) with just under two minutes left. Bell scored the final four points of the game for the Ospreys on a jumper and a pair of free throws.
The Ospreys shot 30.4 percent (17-56) from the field while the Bearcats connected on 39.3 percent (22-56). UNF hit 30 percent from behind the arc (6-20) and UC hit 36 percent (9-25) from three point range. Cincinnati led on the boards, grabbing 42 rebounds to UNF's 31.
UNF will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 19 when the Ospreys host Florida Atlantic in the 2010-11 home opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at UNF Arena.
“I was really disappointed in our defensive effort," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "I think we let our inability to score take our focus off the defensive end. We have to learn to play through tired and we haven't learned that yet as a young team. We knew that keeping them off the offensive glass was going to be important and we didn't execute. Our team gave them 41 points off turnovers and offensive rebounds. You can't win games like that.”
