Women’s Basketball Heads to FGCU and Stetson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team will travel to Atlantic Sun opponents Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. The Ospreys will face FGCU at 6:05 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7 at Alico Arena before traveling to Stetson for a Saturday, Jan. 9, game at 3 p.m. against the Hatters in the Edmunds Center.
The Ospreys (4-9, 1-3 A-Sun) are led by sophomore guard Brittany Kirkland at 14.2 points per game while dishing out 3.5 assists per outing. Freshman forward Jadhken Kerr is adding 8.6 points per game while junior guard Juliemay Syquio is adding 8.4 points. Senior forward Arlande Cherizol is pulling down a team best 6.9 rebounds per game.
UNF is coming off a weekend conference series in which it split a pair of games. The Ospreys defeated Kennesaw State, 68-51 on Jan. 2. Kirkland had 17 of her 21 points in the first half against the Owls. The Ospreys fell to Mercer 54-48, on Jan. 4. Sophomore guard Kim Baker and Kirkland both had 10 points in the game.
For the Eagles (9-3, 4-0 A-Sun) Adrianne McNally is notching 12.7 points per game. Chelsea Lyles is adding 11.8 points while Shannon Murphy is tallying 10.1 points per game. Courtney Chihil is pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game.
FGCU picked up a pair of Atlantic Sun wins on the road in its last outings. The Eagles defeated Belmont 81-48 before dropping Lipscomb 67-47.
This is just the fifth meeting between the two teams. FGCU holds the all-time series record at 3-1. Last season the Eagles picked up wins in both games, winning 63-46 in Fort Myers, Fla. and 57-48 at UNF Arena. Kirkland averaged 12 points against the Eagles and Syquio averaged 7.5 points per game. Cherizol had 9.5 rebounds per game last season against FGCU.
Stetson (1-12, 1-3) is led by Kerri Simpson at 10.7 points per game. Tierra Brown is adding 8.9 points per game while Jessica Conner is averaging 7.6 rebounds per game.
The Hatters lost a pair of A-Sun games on the road at Lipscomb and Belmont in their last outings. Lipscomb defeated Stetson 79-60 while Belmont won 74-69 over the Hatters.
This is the ninth meeting between UNF and Stetson. The Ospreys hold the 5-3 advantage in the all-time series. Last season UNF picked up wins in both games, defeating the Hatters 62-52 on the road and in overtime 60-56 at UNF Arena. Kirkland and Syquio led the team with 18 and 13 points per game, respectively. Cherizol had 7.5 rebounds per game.
