The Ospreys improve to 6-14 overall and 3-8 in Atlantic Sun play, while Jacksonville falls to 5-14 and 4-7 in league play.
Sophomore guard Brittany Kirkland led UNF with 16 points and seven assists. Freshman forward Jadhken Kerr pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and tallied eight points. Senior forward Arlande Cherizol also notched eight points while pulling down eight rebounds and grabbed five steals for the Ospreys.
“This was a great win,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “I thought that in the first half we d allowed them to control the rebounding and they were able to pull down some big boards. I also thought that our defense was a little relaxed. In the second half we did a very good job defensively. We rebounded out of our zone and took advantage of one of their main mentalities of going to the offensive boards. We were able to get defensive rebounds and got some run-out layups that really jump started our team and gave us more energy on the defensive side. I thought we were more aggressive in our zones and created a little more havoc. We never really let them get comfortable in the second half.”
The two teams battled back and forth through the opening half. UNF took a six point, 10-4 lead at the 13:13 mark, but the Dolphins responded to tie the game at 14 with 9:47 on the clock. The Ospreys again extend the lead, going up 25-17 with just over four and half minutes left, but JU would score the rest of the points in the half to cut the UNF lead down to 25-23 going into the break.
The Ospreys opened the second half, outscoring the Dolphins 25-12 over the first 12 minutes of the half to take a 54-35 lead at the 8:26 mark. UNF maintained a double digit lead until the closing seconds of the game when JU drained a three pointer with 19 seconds left.
North Florida shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the field, while Jacksonville shot 31.3 percent (20-64). The Ospreys shot 33.3 percent (3-9) from behind the arc and 50.0 percent (7-14) from the free throw line. The Dolphins shot 18.2 percent (2-11) from 3-point range and 50.0 percent (8-16) from the line. Drameka Griggs led the Dolphins with 23 points while Courtney Jackson grabbed eight rebounds.
