JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a hard-fought 62-55 loss at crosstown rival Jacksonville on Monday night, the University of North Florida men's basketball squad returns home to take on USC Upstate on Thursday, Jan. 21, at UNF Arena.
The Ospreys are 9-10 overall and 4-5 in A-Sun play, while USC Upstate is 2-15 overall and 2-6 in the league.
The game is part of a doubleheader with the UNF women with the women tipping at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:45 p.m.
The men's game can be heard on AM 1320 WBOB and 103.7 FM in Jacksonville or on-line at 1320WBOB.com. Both games can also be seen on ASun.TV.
“Getting back home is always great,” said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. “Completing the first half of the league schedule will give us good insight to where we stand and the adjustments we will have to make leading into the last 10 games prior to the A-Sun post season tournament.”
Thursday's game will feature UNF head Matthew Driscoll coaching in his bare feet as part of the Samaritan's Feet “Barefoot for Barefeet” Coaching Initiative.
The Barefoot for Barefeet Coaches Initiative was conceived in 2007, when IUPUI Coach Ron Hunter coached a game in his barefeet to raise awareness for the plight of impoverished children who suffer needlessly from foot-borne diseases and infections due to a lack of shoes. This year, Coach Driscoll will join Coach Hunter and over 1,000 other coaches across the country by going barefoot to raise funding to put 1-million pairs of shoes on the feet of children through Samaritan's Feet.
“What a great opportunity to bring awareness to people in need and be able to serve,” Driscoll stated. “Coach Hunter has really started something special and we are honored and excited to do all we can to contribute to this outstanding cause.”
Fans can donate in three ways. Fans can text the word “shoes” to 85944 and $5 will be added to their next month's bill and an impoverished child will be given a new pair of athletic shoes. In addition, fans can donate money at the game at donation boxes at the UNF Arena. Also, people can bring a new pair of children's shoes to the game.
Single-game tickets for basketball games are $10 for adults and $8 for youth 17-and-under and senior citizens 55-and-older. One ticket will admit you to both the 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. games on those days. Children 2-and-under and any current UNF student with a valid Osprey1 Card are admitted free. Student guest passes for those events are $5 and limited to one per student.
