UNF visits Belmont and Lipscomb this weekend
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With a trip to Nashville, Tenn., this weekend for a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matches, the University of North Florida women's tennis team will be looking to bring its road record above the even mark and keep its league mark unblemished.
Schedule
UNF (8-2, 2-0 A-Sun) at Belmont (5-4, 0-2) – Friday, March 13 – 2 p.m.
UNF at Lipscomb (6-5, 0-2) – Saturday, March 14 – 10 a.m.
Inside the Matchups
Belmont will make its Davis Complex debut against the Lady Ospreys Friday after playing its first five home matches at the Wildwood Club in Brentwood, Tenn. The Bruins are 3-2 at home with their most recent win a 5-2 decision against Cumberland. Belmont has lost its last two matches, which were both in league play and on the road, to USC Upstate and East Tennessee State.
Lipscomb will begin a three-match homestand Tuesday against Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne and will close the stretch against UNF Saturday. The Lady Bisons are 1-1 at home this season but have been on a seven-match road swing since their last home match on Feb. 13. Lipscomb dropped both its A-Sun matches to Upstate and ETSU over the conference-opening weekend.
Looking Back
The Lady Ospreys made the most of their recent five-match homestand, sweeping three and winning the other two by a 5-2 score to run UNF's record at the UNF Tennis Complex to 7-0 this season. UNF has posted four 7-0 wins on their home courts while the two 5-2 finals in A-Sun play this past week are the two closest matches for the Lady Ospreys at home.
Both Lady Osprey losses this season came on the same road trip to Birmingham, Ala. UAB dealt UNF its first loss of the season by a score of 4-3 on Feb. 20, and Samford edged the Lady Ospreys by the same score a day later. The lone UNF win away from home came in the season opener at Georgia Southern on Jan. 31.
Who's Hot
Junior Raquel Castro began the week with a three-set come-from-behind win in UNF's A-Sun opener against Stetson last Wednesday and then rolled through two more wins over the weekend. She put together 6-2 and 6-1 scores in the second and third sets, respectively, against the Hatters after falling in the first 6-4. She flew past Florida Gulf Coast 6-0, 6-1 before moving into the top singles position Monday against Tennessee-Martin. She showed no signs of slowing down in the No. 1 singles spot, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win.
Did you hear?
Head coach Rodrigo Puebla on road A-Sun play: “We will have a challenging couple of conference matches this weekend. It may be cold and rainy, which would mean the match would be played indoors, but the girls will be ready to play and continue advancing toward our goal of winning the conference.”
Puebla on the team's play on the road: “One of the things we need to work on when playing on the road is adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings. We need to learn to better adapt to the routine of being away from home.”
