UNF begins spring season
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida golf team heads to Gainesville, Fla., this weekend in need of a good showing against a strong field to get in the hunt for an NCAA Regional selection.

The Ospreys finished second in their last outing at the Golden Ocala Invitational, beating out three other teams from the state of Florida in the process.

This year's field in Gainesville includes 10 teams ranked in the top 50 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Florida leads that group with a No. 14 ranking and has won the event the last four years.

Rounds one and two will be played on Saturday. The first round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The second round will follow with a shotgun start at approximately 1 p.m. The third and final round will be played on Sunday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. on holes one and 10. Â

Schedule: Feb. 14-15 (2 Rounds Saturday, 1 Round Sunday, 18 holes per round)

Notables: Jeff Dennis, Jordan Gibb, Chris Kennedy and Major Forbess all competed in the Gator Invitational last year … UNF has started at least one freshman in every event the last four seasons and will bring one to this week's event (Joe Byun) … the Ospreys head into the spring with a No. 88 national ranking in the latest Golfweek poll … the Gator Invitational will serve as a warm up for UNF's home tournament, the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational.

Quoting Coach Schroeder: "This is a golf course that we are familiar with, and compete on every year. The guys' games are continuing to improve. They are working hard and we are looking to have a solid week. This is usually the time of year that we start to play our best and hopefully that trend will continue."
