JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's soccer team left Buies Creek, N.C. with their second straight tie of the season as the Ospreys' Atlantic Sun showdown against Campbell ended 1-1 on Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Ospreys (5-8-3, 2-3-2 A-Sun) gained a valuable point in the contest, bringing their total to eight points. ETSU (9) and Mercer (10) are both currently in the Ospreys way to making the six-team A-Sun tournament field.
“It was a tough match, both teams had their chances,” commented head coach Linda Hamilton after the match. “I felt we controlled the ball and the pace of the match but weren't able to finish. The girls fought hard against a good Campbell team.”
Campbell was able to score the first goal of the match in the 24th minute with a through ball that forward Tove Nordlander was able to settle and dribble around UNF's goalkeeper Rachael Howard.
UNF evened the score seven minutes later on a back pass to Campbell's goalkeeper that senior forward Katelin Swift was able to deflect towards sophomore Vladana Petricevic who capitalized on the Camels' mistake, scoring her third goal of the season.
Through the course of the match, UNF played the Camels tough and matched Campbell step for step. On the night, Campbell won in shots 12-7 and in shots on goal 5-4 but UNF's defensive efforts kept the Camels off the board in the second half.
“Rachael made two great saves to keep us in the match,” said Hamilton.
Howard finished the match with four saves, including three in the second half. In the 61st minute she denied Annabelle Gibney with a diving stop to the left and had another big save in the 89th minute when Nordlander came in on a one-on-one opportunity but on her attempt was deflected out by Howard's dive.
There were few chances after regulation for UNF and Campbell to break the tie. Both teams combined for a total of three shots in overtime.
UNF will travel to Jacksonville's Ashley Sports Complex on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. for the SunTrust River City Rumble against JU. This A-Sun contest will be key for the Ospreys' future for a seed into the A-Sun tournament.
