BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The incoming cold front and expected inches of snow had no cooling effect on the hot hands of Campbell's women's basketball team Monday night when the Camels handed the University of North Florida its 12th-straight loss and seventh in-a-row in Atlantic Sun Conference action, 61-38.
UNF (2-15, 1-7 A-Sun) used a trio of treys to score its first nine points and trail Campbell (9-8, 2-6) by only two points a little less than five minutes into the contest. Holding a 13-11 lead, the home held the Lady Ospreys without a field goal over the next eight minutes and 47 seconds to take control of the opening half.
In that stretch, senior Jennifer Guldager sank a free-throw for UNF's only scoring while the Lady Camels netted 12 to take a 25-12 lead with a less than five minutes to play in the half. With 2:24 left until the break, Campbell built its biggest lead of the half, 32-14, before freshman Brittany Kirkland scored five points in the final minute and a half to help UNF close the first frame on a 7-2 run.
Coming out of the break, the Lady Camels defense put on an encore performance, keeping UNF scoreless for a little less than five minutes. Campbell scored the half's first five points before senior Jennifer Bowen sank a baseline jumper at the 15:24 mark to cut home team's lead to 39-23.
The Lady Camels proceeded to put together a 13-2 clip in the first seven minutes of the second half before UNF went to work. Freshman Kayla Mobley banked a shot off the glass in the low post and Guldager drained a layup on a fast break to bring the home edge back to 20 points. The Lady Ospreys also forced three consecutive turnovers.
Despite the run by UNF, a .296 shooting percentage ultimately decided the outcome for the Lady Ospreys. Campbell, which shot .449 in the contest, continued to find the bottom of the net down the stretch and found its second league victory of the season.
UNF freshman Kayla Mobley led all rebounders, pulling 12 missed shots off the glass, including five on the offensive end of the floor. Bowen and sophomore Juliemay Syquio led the Lady Ospreys with nine points apiece while Guldager bucketed six and Mobley and fellow freshman Brittany Kirkland each added five.
Geami Britt led all scorers, dropping 11 for the Camels. Ashley Williamson finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Ospreys continue their jaunt on the road Thursday when they visit Stetson in search of their first win on the road. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
