UNF wraps up recruiting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's cross country and track and field program wrapped up its recruiting for the 2008-09 season, signing four more athletes to National Letters of Intent, UNF coaches Julie Stackhouse and Mark VanAlstyne announced this week.

Jodian Beecher comes to the Ospreys all the way from Kingston, Jamaica. While at Immaculate Conception High School, she established a personal-best time of 12.2 in the 100m. Beecher will help contribute to UNF's relays and sprints, according to coach Stackhouse.

While competing at Bishop Antsey High School in Trinidad and Tobago, Keva Stephens set a personal-best time of 12.09 in the 100m. Stephens was also a member of her school's 4x100m relay team that ran at the Caribbean National Games, and will compete in that event as a Lady Osprey.

Ashton McGuire was a Junior College National Champion and all-American in the javelin while competing at Central Arizona College where she set a personal-best throw of 135-1. “Her athletic versatility will be valuable not only in the javelin but in the multi-events as well,” Stackhouse said.

Florida native Kayla Mobley rounds out this year's signing class. Mobley was the 3A/4A state Runner-Up in the shot put while competing at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. She will be a dual-sport student-athlete while attending UNF, doubling in basketball and track and field. “Mobley will help jump start the throwing events for the UNF program,” Stackhouse said. She has personal bests of 117-8 in the discus and 41-4 in the shot put.

“We are pleased with this year's recruiting efforts,” Stackhouse said. “With a total of 11 women and seven men joining our squads next year, we will be a young team with a lot of potential. We are as enthused about all of our signees as we are about the new track facility, which is scheduled for completion next week.”
