UNF puts up three home runs
Box Score
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team rediscovered its offensive firepower on Tuesday night in a 12-10 win over Presbyterian at Harmon Stadium.
Although a storm system forced the game time to be delayed by 35 minutes, the Ospreys (4-3) weren't fazed. In fact, they took advantage of the elements. Strong winds blowing straight out of the stadium helped UNF rack up three home runs and a total of five extra base hits.
Sophomore Kevin Martin had a breakout performance, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored. He also made a stellar catch in foul territory near UNF's dugout in the seventh inning that put an end to a Blue Hose five-run inning.
UNF put the pressure on PC early with four runs in the bottom of the second. Senior T.J. Gaudy's double to center field allowed senior Travis Martin to advance to third, which set up an RBI groundout for freshman Michael R. Smith to put the Ospreys on the board. Gaudy later scored when he slid under a tag at the plate. Kevin Martin's towering two-run homer capped the scoring in the inning.
Sophomore Preston Hale launched another blast over the wall for UNF in the third to put it up 5-1. Kevin Martin hammered his other home run to dead center in the bottom of the fourth to tack on another run to the Ospreys' total.
UNF put up five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 11-3. Sophomore Andrew Hannon highlighted the scoring barrage with a bases-clearing three-run double.
Just as the Ospreys got comfortable, the Blue Hose marched back with five runs in the top of the seventh to pull to within 11-8. PC scored two more in the eighth to back UNF up against the wall.
The Ospreys decided to shut the book and bring in closer Tyler Stohr, who as usual shut down the opponent with precision. Stohr allowed just one hit while striking out one in 1.1 innings to pick up his third save of the season.
Junior RHP Spencer Jones picked up his first win as an Osprey after he went 2.2 innings in relief of junior J.R. Dunaway, who made a solid return to the mound after sitting out 2007 injured.
UNF will wrap up its two-game series with the Blue Hose at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Harmon Stadium. Live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
