Lady Osprey Softball Weekly

The University of North Florida softball team will travel down the road this week for the JU Invitational, taking on three teams over a two-day stretch.

Action begins for the Lady Ospreys (9-7) Friday morning when they take on Coastal Carolina before squaring off with Virginia later that day. Play continues on Saturday with a matchup against Stony Brook and a second game against Virginia.

The Lady Ospreys finished last week with a 5-3 record, sweeping a doubleheader at Georgia Southern before taking third place at the Aquafina Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.

Notables: UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth will square off with an old friend when the Lady Ospreys meet up with Virginia this week … Wilmoth and Virginia coach Eileen Schmidt were teammates among the professional softball ranks shortly after Wilmoth graduated from LaSalle in 1988 … Devyn Findley only allowed four earned runs last week at the Aquafina Invitational, but came out of that tournament with a 0-3 record, losing a pair of 1-0 games to Notre Dame as well as a 3-0 contest to seventh-ranked Florida … the matchup with Florida marked the second time in the last two seasons UNF has taken on a top-10 team in the nation … the team played a pair of games against second-ranked Arizona State in tournament action last season … Findley helped herself at the plate this week, leading UNF with a .389 batting average to go along with a home run and five RBIs … Gwen Williams also drove in five runs and took the lead in the all-time home run chase at UNF … she enters the week with 19 home runs, one more than teammate Ashley Parenteau, who hit her first home run of the season last week against Georgia Southern … UNF is 27-27 in tournament play on the NCAA Division I level.

Quoting Coach Wilmoth: “We are excited to be playing closer to home this weekend against some formidable competition. We need to pick our bats up a bit and support our pitchers better this weekend.”
