Lady Ospreys comeback for victory over GWU
Box Score
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida pitcher Joanna Kurycki gave up only one unearned run and held Gardner-Webb at bay until her team was able to rally for a 4-1 win to take home third place at the Aquafina Invitational.
After being held scoreless for five innings of play, UNF (9-7) exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to close the tournament with a 2-3 record. The Lady Osprey pitching staff only surrendered seven runs over the weekend, while Kurycki allowed only three hits Sunday and struck out three in the winning effort.
“It was nice to get some timely hitting from some new faces who came through with clutch hits,” UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth. “Joanna pitched a great game, and did what she does, forcing hitters to hit the ball on the ground.”
Gardner-Webb cracked the scoreboard first on Sunday in the top of the fourth inning, courtesy of a Heather Hyde error that scored Christa Fullwood all the way from first base.
UNF threatened in both the fourth and fifth innings, putting runners in scoring position each inning, but failed to come through with a run. The Lady Ospreys finally rallied in the sixth, sending nine hitters to the plate and scoring four runs.
Hyde started the rally with a double before tying the game on a Laura Pulling double to left. Stephanie Luciani made it a 2-1 contest one batter later, scoring Stephanie Hall from third. Kacie McCloud followed with a double that drove home a run, while an Ashley Parenteau single to left drove home McCloud to comple the scoring.
Parenteau, McCloud and Williams each collected three hits for the Lady Ospreys, while Haley Scism led Gardner-Webb with a 1-for-2 performance. Taryn Beck (2-4) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.
