SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The University of North Florida women's soccer team (3-6-1, 2-0-0 A-Sun) defeated Atlantic Sun Conference newcomer USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 3-2.
"It is always great to get a victory of any kind, especially when you are on the road," head coach Linda Hamilton said. "I am disappointed we gave up that last goal, but USC Upstate is a good team and you have to give them credit."
UNF (3-6-1) out shot the Spartans 18-11, while also recording a 10-6 shot on goal margin. Goalkeeper Rachael Howard ended the game with 4 saves to Brittany Daughtry's 7.
Senior Jessica Jowers put the Lady Ospreys on the board in the seventh minute, after her corner kick drifted into the goal. The goal was Jowers' first of the season. UNF almost made it 2-0 in the 11th minute when Kady Dearing headed the ball toward net, but was unable to get it by the Upstate keeper.
Dearing had a chance to redeem herself in the 20th minute after collecting her own rebound and putting into the back of the net. The play began with UNF pushing forward and putting the ball into the 18-yard box, where Dearing put one shot on goal, but was blocked by an Upstate defender before collecting her own rebound and pounding it into the net.
The Lady Ospreys continued to pressure the Spartans out of the locker room, but were unable to keep Upstate off the board as they earned one back in the 63rd minute. UNF answered back with a Katelin Swift goal in the 75th minute. Swift's goal came on a Lady Osprey counter attack that saw Swift pull the keeper out of the net before blasting it into the far post netting giving UNF a 3-1 lead.
UNF's quickly fell to just one goal in the 87th minute when Upstate's Alyssa Roegner found the back of the net. However the late Upstate goal was not enough as the Lady Ospreys won their second straight game, improving to 2-0 in the A-Sun.
The Lady Ospreys return home to host A-Sun action on Sept. 5, as they take on Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. at Hodges Stadium.
