JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team won for the second straight day at the UNF Tennis Complex, knocking off Atlantic Sun Conference foe Kennesaw State 6-1 on Thursday.
The Lady Ospreys (11-3, 5-2 A-Sun) got back on the winning track after losing their first back-to-back matches prior to upending Campbell on Wednesday and KSU (0-7, 0-3 A-Sun) on Thursday.
Against KSU, the Lady Ospreys swept doubles play, winning all three matches to grab the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Florencia Torres and Ina Durcakova improved to 11-0 with an 8-2 win over Lindsey Whalen and Jeni Thomas.
In singles play, Torres then rallied from a one-set deficit to knock off KSU's Karen Ammann 2-6, 6-2, 10- 1. Catalina Castillo won at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-2) for UNF, followed by Natalia Sanchez at No. 2 (6-0, 6-3), Carolina de Melo at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0) and Danielle Desmarais at No. 6 (6-3, 6-2). Kennesaw State's only win of the day came at No. 4 singles, where Jeni Thomas defeated Robin Rogers, 6-3, 7-5.
Thursday's match was UNF's fifth in six days.
"It was a solid victory for us and it closed a very long week for the girls," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "We feel that we made some improvements, and all these matches allowed us to get ready for the upcoming matches."
The Lady Ospreys will take a week off before returning to action next weekend in Nashville, Tenn., with a pair of matches against Lipscomb and Belmont, respectively.
