DELAND, Fla. - The
University of North Florida softball team pounded out
10 hits in a 4-2 win against Bethune-Cookman on
Friday at the Stetson Tournament before losing its
second game of the day 5-3 to Temple.
Heather Hyde collected three hits on the afternoon for
UNF (11-11), while Elizabeth Howell drove home a run
in both games and Christina Evans scored two runs
to lead the Lady Ospreys.
UNF scratched across single runs in the first, third,
fourth and seventh innings in its opening game of the
day, downing Bethune-Cookman 4-2.
Hyde and Evans each went 2-for-3 at the plate with an
RBI and a run. Hyde got the scoring started in the top
of the first inning doubling off the left field wall to drive
Evans home.
BCC answered with two runs in the bottom of the first
before Howell drove home Hyde with a one-out single.
Evans doubled home Kelli Rutenbar in the fourth to
make it a 3-2 lead before Kara Rutenbar finally
completed the scoring with a triple to right-center that
scored Ashley Parenteau.
Tori Ahern (2-4) held on from there, working six
scoreless innings after allowing two earned runs in
the opening inning of play. Ahern only allowed three
hits while walking two and striking out six.
UNF fell behind once again in its second game of the
day when Temple's Adrienne Repsher belted a home
run to right field in the top of the first inning.
Repsher and Jessica Rhone each accounted for two
hits, while Krystal Metzler went 4-for-4 at the plate. The
top five spots in the order accounted for 10 of
Temple's 13 hits as well as all five of its runs and
RBIs.
Howell helped give the Lady Ospreys their only lead of
the game with an RBI single that drove home Kelli Rutenbar. Evans later came in to score on a wild pitch
to give UNF a 2-1 advantage after one inning of play.
Trailing 3-2, Parenteau helped spark a two-out rally in
the bottom of the fourth, reaching on a single before
moving to third on a Kara Rutenbar bloop single.
Mallory Butler followed her with a double to left that
scored Parenteau. UNF missed an opportunity,
however, to put a couple more on the board and it
proved costly when Rohn led off the top of the fifth with
a home run that put Temple ahead for good.
That home run chased Katie Brosky (5-6) after four-
plus innings of work. Devyn Findley came on from
there, allowing one an earned run and striking out six
in three innings of work.
UNF left a combined 15 runners on base in its two
games.
Parenteau led UNF in game two with a 2-for-3
performance at the plate.
Action continues at the Stetson Tournament on
Saturday when the Lady Ospreys take on Mount St.
Mary's at 2 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. matchup with
Stetson.
