JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team broke out of its first slump of the season on Wednesday afternoon by taking out Big East Conference foe St. John's 5-2 at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Lady Ospreys (10-3) had lost two straight matches, and three of four, headed into Wednesday's match against the Red Storm (1-5) after opening the season with a school-record-tying eight straight wins.
UNF took two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point out of the gates, getting 8-6 wins from Ina Durcakova and Florencia Torres at the No. 2 position and Vanessa Sanchez and Danielle Desmarais at No. 3. UNF's Catalina Castillo and Natalia Sanchez lost to Alison Adamski and Nataly Tumsevica 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, the Lady Ospreys closed things out with wins at the bottom four positions. Natalia Sanchez (6-4, 6-4 at No. 3), Torres (6-0, 6-4 at No. 4), Robin Rogers (6-7, 6-4, 10-3 at No. 5) and Durcakova (6-4, 6-0 at No. 5) earned victories for UNF.
"It was a very tough match today," UNF assistant coach Rodrigo Puebla said. "After winning a difficult doubles point, we came out with a better mentality into our singles. Everyone raised their intensity level and fought until the last point. It has been a long week of tennis for our girls, but the team has shown a great spirit and focus on the court. Hopefully tomorrow we will come out with the same intensity and level from the beginning."
The Lady Ospreys will play their fifth match in six days on Thursday when they square off with Atlantic Sun Conference foe Kennesaw State at the UNF Tennis Complex. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
