JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Plenty of streaks came to an end on Saturday at the
UNF Softball Complex in a doubleheader split
between UNF (18-13, 1-1 A-Sun) and Campbell (18-
18-1, 2-2 A-Sun).
Campbell ended UNF's 16-game home winning
streak with a 2-0 win in the opener, while UNF
snapped its five-game losing streak in Atlantic Sun
Conference games and eight-game losing streak to A-
Sun teams with an 8-1 win in the nightcap.
"We didn't play up to our potential in game one," UNF
head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We had some base
running errors, which cost us. Devyn Findley pitched
well again in game two and I thought Katie Brosky
pitched well enough to win the first game, but just ran
into one bad inning."
Findley (8-1) finally gave up her first run at the UNF
Softball Complex this season, thanks a Campbell
double steal in the top of the fourth that saw Megan
Paul score from third. Aside from that Findley was
dominant once again, allowing only three hits while
striking out eight and walking two.
Lauren Caviness (9-9) started both ends of the
doubleheader for the Fighting Camels, shutting UNF
out in the opener before getting touched for three runs
and a loss in the nightcap.
The Lady Ospreys finally snapped a 14-inning
scoreless streak against Caviness that dated back to
last season in the opening frame of game two.
Elizabeth Howell - who had a nine-game hitting
streak snapped in the first game - delivered the run
with a one-out double that scored Kelli Rutenbar.
"I popped up three times in the first game and I was
getting sick of it," Howell said. "We finally adjusted to
[Caviness] in game two and showed we were a better
hitting team."
Howell led the Lady Ospreys with a 3-for-4
performance that included two runs and an RBI.
UNF cracked the scoreboard again in the second
inning, building a 3-0 lead after Rutenbar doubled to
left to drive home two.
The Lady Ospreys took advantage of three Campbell
errors in the third to score two more, before Ashley Parenteau drove in a run in the fifth and Kara Rutenbar
followed two batters later with a single up the middle
that scored two.
Six of UNF's nine starters collected a hit in the win
with Kelli and Kara Rutenbar each driving in two runs.
The only time Findley found herself in trouble was the
top of the fourth when she gave up a leadoff single to
Paul, who moved to second on a Shayla Cullom base
hit before going to third on a fielder's choice and
scoring on the Campbell double steal.
Paul scored the second of two Campbell runs in the
opener, as Brosky and Caviness locked up in a
pitcher's duel for six innings.
The seventh inning started innocently for Brosky who
retired the first two hitters she faced before allowing a
walk to Jessica Huffman. Paul followed with a single
to left, then advanced to second on a throw. Both
runners finally scored when Cullom singled to left.
UNF collected five hits and put three runners in
scoring position, but could not produce a run.
Amy Higgs led the Lady Ospreys with a 2-for-3
performance that included a double.
Brosky worked her way around four of her five walks,
but couldn't get out of a two-out jam in the seventh that
started with a walk. She allowed five hits while striking
out six.
UNF is back on the road next week when it heads to
UAB for a doubleheader on Thursday before taking on
Birmingham Southern in a pair of games on Friday.
