TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team put up a tough fight early against the second-ranked Florida State Seminoles, but FSU's power hitters came around and handed the Ospreys a 16-3 loss on Tuesday at Dick Howser Stadium.
Florida State (14-0), off to its best start since 1975, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Jack Rye blasted a two-run home run. UNF (2-9) answered the challenge in the next inning when senior Jon Dandridge hit an RBI groundout that drove in senior Damon Olinto. The play was set up by junior Andy Warren's double up against the left field wall that sent Olinto to third base.
Senior first baseman Jimmy Glanville kept the momentum going with an RBI double to left center that drove in Warren to tie the score at two. One out later, redshirt freshman Mycal Jones hit a single up the middle to put runners at the corners, but the inning was ended on junior second baseman Chad Knight's groundout.
The Seminoles soon dashed the hopes of the Ospreys, putting together a five-run bottom of the fourth that put FSU up 9-2. The inning was fueled by five walks and one hit batsman by UNF pitching. Sophomore starting RHP Tyler Stohr was pulled from the game after beginning the inning by loading the bases. He was replaced by senior LHP Renzo Sheppard, who wasn't able to find the strike zone, walking in two runs. Senior LHP Brad Johnson made a rare relief appearance in the inning and was able to close it out.
Senior designated hitter Brandon Diaz helped the Ospreys put another run on the board in the top of the fifth, knocking an RBI double to right center that drove in Knight, who led off the inning with a double to the same spot.
But FSU didn't let UNF breathe, tallying seven more runs over the next four innings for the game's final score. Stohr moved to 0-3 on the year after going three innings and allowing seven runs on six hits.
Dandridge finished 1-for-3 at the plate to extend his hitting streak to seven games. The loss moved UNF to 0-5 against teams ranked in the Top 25 this season and 0-2 against teams in the Top 10.
The Ospreys will try to bounce back this weekend at Harmon Stadium, as they will kick off the 2007 Kennel Club Classic with Florida A&M at 7 p.m. on Friday. UNF will face Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m. on Saturday, then FAMU again on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats and audio are available on UNFOspreys.com.
