UNF can't overcome turnovers, cold shooting in loss
BOX SCORE
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah State got 10 points each from Lazarius Coleman and Curtis Brown to propel the Tigers past visiting North Florida 58-32 on Tuesday night in men's basketball action at Tiger Arena.
UNF's James Grimball scored a team- high 14 points and tallied a school-record seven blocks to lead the way for UNF (1-5), which tied the school record for fewest points scored and shot just 17 percent for the game with only seven field goals made. The Ospreys trailed 35-16 at halftime and were outscored 23-16 over the final 20 minutes.
"We have to stay together as a team and accept challenges physically," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "That team got up in our face and went right through us on both ends of the floor. We didn't have an answer. I thought we played relatively well defensively, but offensively we just didn't play well and didn't make plays. We didn't respond to the challenge that presented to us tonight. Give Savannah State credit for what they did."
Tom Hammonds added 10 points for UNF, hitting 7-of-8 free throws.
The Ospreys' undoing started with turnovers, with 28 miscues leading to 28 points for the Tigers (5-4). Savannah State shot 38 percent from the floor (22-of-58) and hit 5-of-11 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. UNF hit just 7-of-42 field goal attempts, including 2-of-12 from beyond the arc.
UNF played Tuesday without freshman DeVon Jones, who is recovering from a concussion suffered against Florida, and the second half without junior guard Ian Gibson, who injured his back after a hard foul late in the first half.
The Ospreys will now take 10 days off before playing William & Mary on Dec. 7 at UNF Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
