Lady Ospreys put lockdown on Islanders
HATTIESBURG
UNF (2-3) outrebounded TAMCC (0-6) 27-12 in the second half and pulled down 14 offensive rebounds in the game.
The Lady Ospreys also controlled the defensive end in the second half, holding the Islanders to 14.3 percent shooting in the frame and 29.1 percent for the game.
“We really came out and made a strong effort in the second half,” UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. “We controlled the boards and that helped us play our game and led to points on the offensive end.”
Jennifer Guldager – who made the Lady Eagle Classic all-tournament team – finished one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring a team high 11 points for UNF, while pulling down nine rebounds. UNF also received 10 points from Antoinette Reames, while Willonda Windham pulled down seven rebounds in her first start of the season.
UNF started the second half on a 10-2 run to claim a 34-30 advantage before eventually increasing that to seven after Juliemay Syquio laid a shot off the glass near the eight minute mark of the second half.  A Jade Davis free throw pulled the Islanders within six with 40 seconds to play, but a pair of Syquio free throws as well as a pair of free throws by Shandrea Moore proved to be enough for UNF.
The Lady Ospreys won the battle of the boards 39-32, while turning the ball over 25 times compared to 18 Islander turnovers.
The Lady Ospreys got off to a fast start, but
Eight different players contributed on the offensive end for UNF with Tiffamy Williams and Willonda Windham – making her first start of the season – each scoring four points.
The game featured 14 lead changes and six ties.
Elisa Beagle led the Islanders with 10 points in the first half, hitting her first three shots from the field. She was contained from there, hitting only one shot the rest of the way and finishing the game with 14 points.
UNF returns home on Friday when it hosts Lehigh at 7 p.m.
